The ECR Party welcomes the statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – recognising the abuse of Uyghurs in Xinjiang as Genocide. In our own activities we had also reached the same assessment and share the same concerns over grave violations of human rights by the Communist Party of China. One of our greatest concerns is the fact that as many as 2 million Uyghurs are currently detained in Chinese internment camps where they are subject to inhumane treatment including forced sterilisation.

The European Conservatives and Reformists Party now calls on the European Union to follow the example of the United States and make a similar declaration – and recognise that the events in Xinjiang are a genocide.
